Manufacturing orders

Make an order, reserve components, finish it, and handle scrap, splits and unbuilds.

A manufacturing order says: make this many of this product. Stock moves when the order finishes.

Make an order

Go to Manufacturing orders and click New order. Choose the Product to make and the Quantity. The Bill of materials fills in by itself. Add a Deadline and a Start if you have them; leave Start blank for as soon as the work centres are free.

Click Confirm order, or Save as draft to confirm it later.

Is it ready?

A confirmed order reserves its components, unless your settings reserve only when someone asks. Each order shows one of these:

  • Waiting for components - nothing is reserved yet.
  • Partly available - some of it is here.
  • Ready - everything is reserved.

Check stock tries again. Release stock gives the reservation back. If something is short, the order links you to What to make and buy.

Finish it

Click Finish, then check the Quantity made, the date and what was used.

  • If you made fewer, switch on Make the rest on a new order (backorder).
  • Items with batches or serial numbers ask for those numbers.
  • If what was used differs from the BoM, the BoM's rule decides: warn, allow or refuse.

When the order finishes, components leave stock and the product comes in at its real cost. See Costs and work in progress.

Finished the order with the wrong amounts? Click Correct what was used.

Picking and putting away

With two or three steps in settings, work happens in its own warehouse and stock moves there on real transfer orders.

  1. On a confirmed order, click Pick components under Moving stock. It suggests what is still short. The order is ready once the components have arrived.
  2. Finish the order as usual. Components are used from the production warehouse, and the product is made there.
  3. With three steps, click Put away on the finished order to move the product to where finished goods are kept.

Picked too much, or scrapped some and need more? Send unused back returns what is left over, and Pick components works again whenever the order is short.

More actions

Under More on an open order:

  • Change dates and people
  • Scrap - record what was thrown away.
  • Split - one order becomes several. To merge orders, select them in the orders list.
  • Plan again and Clear the plan
  • Cancel order

You can also add or change components on the order itself, and add steps, notes and files.

Scrap

Scrap records what was thrown away, why and what it cost, on an order or on its own. It takes the goods out of stock. On a finished order, you can scrap the finished product.

Unbuild

Unbuild takes a finished product apart and puts its components back in stock. Start from the Unbuild page, or from a finished order.

Batches and serial numbers

Items followed by batch or serial number keep their numbers through the order. Switch on Number batches and serial numbers by themselves in settings if you want them numbered for you. To follow one number from materials to product, see Reports.
