Sprints, backlog and story points

Plan work in short sprints - a backlog, story points, a sprint board, burndown and velocity.

Open a project and its Sprints tab. Sprints are in the Standard plan and above.

Plan a sprint

  1. Click + Sprint (project managers). Give it a name, dates and a goal - or leave them; a name is made for you.
  2. In Backlog, the project's open tasks that are in no sprint are listed, the most important first. Drag tasks into the sprint (subtasks go with their parent). Drag them back to the backlog the same way.
  3. Give tasks story points in the small box on each row (or in the task panel). Without points, a sprint counts tasks instead.
  4. Click Start sprint and confirm the dates. One sprint runs at a time in a project. The task owners are told it has started, and what is in it now is what the team commits to.

Add tasks straight into the backlog with the box at its foot.

The sprint board

Sprint board shows the running sprint's tasks in columns by status. Drag a card to change its status. The header shows the dates, the days left, the goal and how much is done.

Complete a sprint

Click Complete sprint. Finished tasks stay in the sprint (for its history). Choose where the unfinished ones go: the backlog, a planned sprint, or a new sprint.

Reports

  • Burndown: what was left at the end of each day against a straight line to zero by the last day.
  • Velocity: for the last completed sprints, what was committed when each started and what was done. Plan the next sprint near the average.

In the task panel

Each task shows its Sprint (or Backlog) and Story points once the project works in sprints - change them there too.
